Word Eighteen: Chata

The Strong’s number assigned to the Hebrew word Chata is Strong 2398 chata’ {khaw-taw’} – A primitive root; properly to miss; hence (figuratively and generally) to sin; by inference to forfeit, lack, expiate, repent, (causatively) lead astray, condemn: – bear the blame, cleanse, commit [sin], by fault, harm he hath done, loss, miss, (make) offend (-er), offer for sin, purge, purify (self), make reconciliation, (cause, make) sin (-ful, -ness), trespassive.  Reference: http://strongsnumbers.com/hebrew/2398.htm

All those words bring to mind Gesthsemane.  Let’s read the following:

Matthew 26:36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.  37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.  38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.  39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.  40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.  43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.  44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

All of the following occurred at Gethsemane (these are words found in the description above): Judas fofeited his nheritance and became the Son of Perditon.  He condemned Jesus by his deceit.  Who was in his circle of inlfuence? How many did he lead astray as he turned on Jesus.

Jesus prays at Gethsemane saying to the Father “thy will be done” and he knews he  would die to bear the blame for our sins and  cleanse our iniquities.  He knew he would become sin, and, as he sorrowed in the garden he knew and felt the ugliness of sin.

In offering himself up for our sins he reconciled us with our Father God.  As he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, he died to his “self” and submitted his will.  I imagine that the Satan thought victory was his.  That it was all over.

Ha! But we can say as it does in Genesis 50:20 – But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.
