The Project Gutenberg-Pilgrim’s Progress

I want to share this wonderful site with you and with permission as noted. The very first book I read as a Christian was “Pilgrim’s Progress”.  I was introduced to it by Topi, and we would discuss the book long into the night. I have re-read it over the years, and it remains relevant.  My heart is encouraged as I read the metaphorical journey of “Christian”.  Make this part of your summer reading or local book club.

The Pilgrim’s Progress (journey) takes him to places and paths where we have found ourselves at one time or another, such as:

His journey also takes him to places we hope for, such as:

  • The House of the Interpreter
  • River of Life
  • The Celestial City
  • The Pilgrim’ who is also known as Graceless, and later is called by the name Christian meets these along the way:

    It is available as an E-book. There are very many other titles available, but this one will touch your heart. It is a book for all ages.  The levels of depth are determined as the Holy Spirit speaks to you.

    This book and this excerpt are what first encouraged me to write.   The following is an excerpt from “The Author’s (John Bunyan) Apology for his Book “The Pilgrim’s Progress”.

    When at the first I took my pen in hand
    Thus for to write, I did not understand
    That I at all should make a little book
    In such a mode; nay, I had undertook
    To make another; which, when almost done,
    Before I was aware, I this begun.

    AND

    Solidity, indeed, becomes the pen
    Of him that writeth things divine to men;
    But must I needs want solidness, because
    By metaphors I speak? Were not God’s laws,
    His gospel laws, in olden times held forth
    By types, shadows, and metaphors? Yet loth
    Will any sober man be to find fault
    With them, lest he be found for to assault
    The highest wisdom. No, he rather stoops,
    And seeks to find out what by pins and loops,
    By calves and sheep, by heifers and by rams,
    By birds and herbs, and by the blood of lambs,
    God speaketh to him; and happy is he
    That finds the light and grace that in them be.

    AND

    Which way it pleases God; for who knows how,
    Better than he that taught us first to plough,
    To guide our mind and pens for his design?
    And he makes base things usher in divine.

    AND

    This book will make a traveller of thee,
    If by its counsel thou wilt ruled be;
    It will direct thee to the Holy Land,
    If thou wilt its directions understand:
    Yea, it will make the slothful active be;
    The blind also delightful things to see
